Smithy's Last and Lundy's First!

Bradford F1 World Final 1985. You know, I think there's still a fair amount of Odsal shale dust in my lungs 21 years later! The track was as dry as shale gets and breaking up - but the race went ahead. Held one week after the Speedway World Final, and with a stadium rebuilt in a hurry - it is fair to say that the 1985 F1 World Final suffered from lack of track preparation time. Shame really, because the anticipation of the big race was huge - there were high expectations of a big first bend pile up. In the end, it never happened - at least not for the first few rows. Others get caught up further back when Wainman rolls before the end of lap 1 (the crash itself is not caught, but look closely and you can see how they got away without throwing the yellows - keep an eye on Bammy!), but Smithy was away into the distance. The three cameras do well to peer through the dust clouds (better than I did stood on the first turn, anyway!), but it does get a little confused at times... An interesting interview with Smithy follows the big race, where he contemplates whether he should retire or not (again!!!). Luckily, the rest of the meeting is better watered and there's plenty of action which is caught by the cameras. Just when the final is starting to go the way of the dusty WF race the heavens open, give us a decent view and a great drive by Mick Noden... Please note that this coverage does not include the '1000' race after the GN. However, coverage of this race is already available from Les Cotton.

Belle Vue F1 World Final 1987. This time we have two heats and the big race only - for some reason, they decided to dispense of the rest of the meeting... However, it does allow a lot of time for an extended introduction to each of the drivers in the World Final. The race itself is an absolute masterclass in dealing with traffic by John Lund. There is no stopping him once he's past Wainman and Berresford... which takes no time! There's plenty of action and drama, but the story is all about Lundy's storm through the back markers. Two years previous, we saw the end of one era of domination... In 1987 we see the start of the new order.

The DVD runs for around 1 hour 55 minutes and costs just £6...

Quality: These DVDs have been sourced from VHS tapes of an analogue cable television channel which are around 20 years old. The picture and sound quality is as good as possible, given this. There are no major tracking problems. Any issues concerning quality or incomplete programmes will be made clear in the 'QUALITY ISSUES HIGHLIGHT' section above.

Copyright: I have contacted the last known copyright holders of this material a number of times by email and in writing to explore making the whole library available from master tapes. There has been no reply as yet. I would love to see the whole library (1984 to 1987) made available, but it seems unlikely at this time.
